Brief summary:

After an enormous wave sweeps away his village, Mau believes that he is alone on his island. But he discovers that Daphne has survived a shipwreck casued by the same wave, and has washed ashore on his island as well. As other survivors gather, they learn to communicate and work to rebuild their lives.

 

Comments:

This is an engaging and thought-provoking read. It hits on serious issues about nationhood, responsibility, and religion, enlivened by Pratchett's whimsy and humor.
