Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire

Page history last edited by Lisa Gordis 14 years, 3 months ago

Bibliographical information:

Collins, Suzanne. Catching Fire. (Sequel to The Hunger Games.) New York: Scholastic Press, 2009.

Brief summary:

Katniss, Gale, and Peeta are back, along with previous victors of The Hunger Games. Following their victory tour, Katniss and Peeta return to their district, but discover that the Capitol has come up with a new twist on the hunger games in order to suppress the dissent that's bubbling up in the districts of Panem.

Comments:

I've seen quite a lot of debate about whether Catching Fire is as good as The Hunger Games. The readers in our house all agreed that it was. Both our middle-schooler and her parents found the plot and characters compelling, including the relationships and the politics.

Grade/Age level:

School Library Journal lists as grades 7 & up. I had nightmares from it, but my twelve-year-old seemed less troubled by it. When I expressed surprise at this, a friend suggests that the idea of adolescents dying is more disturbing to parents than to adolescents. I'm not sure if this is the explanation, but it's worth considering.

Cautions:

I found this novel dark and frightening. While my daughter was less troubled by it than I feared she would be, she did want to discuss it, and I think she appreciated that I had read it as well.

If you like this book, you might also like . . .
