Bibliographical information:
Hale, Shannon. Princess Academy. New York: Bloomsbury, 2005.
Brief summary:
Miri lives a hardscrabble life on Mount Eskel, where the most important product is linder, a marble-like stone quarried out of the mountain. When the priests of Danland announce that the prince's bride will come from Mount Eskel, the teenaged girls of the community are taken to a special school built to train them in anticipation of the prince's arrival and selection of his bride.
Comments:
I confess that this novel was not at all what I expected from the title. While Miri competes with her classmates to be best, she is ambivalent about being a princess, interested more in how she can help her family than in living an elegant life. And the aspects of her training that prove most interesting are economics and diplomacy, both of which Miri applies to help her community.
Grade/Age level:
Roughly grade 4 and up
