Comments:
My eleven-year-old liked this less than some of Heinlein's others, but still enjoyed it. I enjoyed the mix of small town life and space adventure--it's interesting to read 1950s science fiction, both for the picture of 1950s America and for the 1950s imagining of the future. (Gender issues are particularly interesting in Tunnel in the Sky, but they're not entirely absent here.)
Grade/Age level:
Something like grades 5 and up
