Bibliographical information:
Clapp, Patricia. Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth. New York: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard, 1968. Reprint. Peter Smith, 1993.
Brief summary:
Constance Hopkins is a reluctant teen-aged passenger on the Mayflower. She'd rather stay in London. The novel tells of her experiences in the first years of the Plymouth settlement.
Comments:
Like much of Clapp's fiction, this novel is engaging and is reasonably faithful to its historical sources, but also fairly heavy on romance. While it starts with the voyage to America, it concludes on Constance's wedding day.
Grade/Age level:
Grade 5-8
Cautions:
This review is a work in progress, as the book was recalled; I'll fill out the review when I can.
