Bibliographical information:

Anderson, M. T. Whales on Stilts. Illus. Kurt Cyrus. New York: Harcourt, 2005.

Brief summary:

When Lily Gefelty accompanies her father to his office on Career Day, she discovers that his boss is a mysterious character planning to take over the world. She enlists her friends Katie Mulligan and Jasper Dash to help. Katie and Jasper are themselves accustomed to adventure; in fact, their adventures have been described in series books. Together they set out to save the planet from domination by whales on stilts. In the process, Lily learns that she, too, is a hero.

Comments:

The novel offers an amusing send up of series adventures. Harcourt staff writers follow the characters around and misrepresenting their exploits, and ads for imaginary books and book clubs punctuate the novel's pages.
