Laura Amy Schlitz, A Drowned Maiden's Hair

Page history last edited by Shoshana Flax 16 years, 2 months ago

Bibliographical information:

Schlitz, Laura Amy. A Drowned Maiden's Hair: A Melodrama. Boston: Candlewick, 2006.

Brief summary:

Three elderly sisters take in Maud Mary Flynn, an eleven-year-old from an orphan asylum, and insist that she hide in the attic. Maud eventually learns that they are hiding her so that she can play the parts of spirits in the seances they stage for profit.

Comments:

A really innovative story. Readers will sympathize with Maud's conflict between her desire to belong and her qualms about the seances.

Grade/Age level:

 Late middle grade

Cautions:

Some might see this story as morbid.
