Jean Little, From Anna

Page history last edited by Lisa Gordis 16 years, 8 months ago

Bibliographical information:

Little, Jean. From Anna. 1972.  New York: Harper Collins, 1973.

Sequel: Listen to the Singing

Brief summary:

Anna Solden is the awkward child in her German family. As the Soldens grow increasingly troubled by the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, they prepare to leave Germany for Canada. Shortly after their arrival, they discover that Anna is not clumsy, but rather has very poor eyesight, and must attend a special class for visually impaired children. There, she learns that she is smart and competent, and learns to take joy in her new accomplishments and her new friends.

Comments:

This is one of Little's best books. Anna's story is sad, funny, and moving, and Little artfully weaves together world events and Anna's experiences.

Grade/Age level:

 Ages 8-12.

Cautions:

Little doesn't treat the horrors of Nazi Germany fully, but upsetting events are described, and parents should be prepared to answer questions.
