Elizabeth Goudge, Linnets and Valerians

Page history last edited by Lisa Gordis 15 years, 3 months ago

Bibliographical information:

Goudge, Elizabeth. Linnets and Valerians. 1964. Boston: Gregg Press, 1981.

Brief summary:

The Linnet children have been left in the care of their grandmother while their father is in India. Escape from her strict discipline lands them at the home of their uncle, a vicar and former schoolmaster who does not like children, but whom they come to love dearly. Mixed in with ordinary family doings are strange workings of black and white magic.

Comments:

There's an interesting play of kids-in-the-country and possible magic. Though Uncle Ambrose does not believe in magic--black or white--the staff of his home and that of the neighboring Valerians does, and the kids come to believe in it as well.

Grade/Age level:
