Brief summary:

Fifth-grader Elizabeth is new in town. On Halloween morning, she meets Jennifer on her way to school. Jennifer is confident and mysterious, and tells Elizabeth that she's a witch. Soon, she offers to train Elizabeth in witchcraft, putting Elizabeth through a series of ordeals in order to prepare her to make flying potion.

Comments:

I first read this book as a fourth-grader, and I have loved it ever since. While Elizabeth's worries and her conflicts with Jennifer are real, there's also wonderful humor in Konigsburg's descriptions of school and family life. And ultimately, the book is about friendship more than about witchcraft.
