Bibliographical information:
Edwardson, Debby Dahl. Whale Snow. Illus. Annie Patterson. Watertown, Massachusetts: Charlesbridge, 2003.
Brief summary:
As Amiqqaq awaits the return of his father's whaling crew, his grandmother teaches him about "whale snow," which comes "when a whale has given himself to the People." When Amiqqaq's father returns with the whaling flag, the whole community celebrates and experiences "whale happiness."
Comments:
The book includes a brief glossary of Iñupiaq words, and a discussion o fthe relationship between the Iñupiat and Bowhead whale. While I thought that my kids would find the idea of whaling difficult to process, given the representations to which they're accustomed, both liked this book very much and didn't seem at all troubled.
Grade/Age level:
Ages 4-8
Cautions:
I can imagine kids who would have trouble processing this book in relation to texts which follow a "save the whales" model, so parents and teachers should be prepared for discussion.
