Bibliographical information:
Garner, Alan. The Owl Service. 1967. New York: Magic Carpet Books, 1999.
Brief summary:
Step-siblings Alison and Roger are visiting her summer home in Wales when they discover a strange set of plates decorated with flowery patterns that can be traced and reassembled into owls. Along with Gwyn, the caretaker's son, they investigate, and find themselves caught up in strange dynamics that seem to be linked to the mythic history of the valley.
Comments:
The story is compelling and engaging, but there are points when the drama seems overblown. Some of the tension in the relationships involve class dynamics which may puzzle American kids.
Grade/Age level:
Grades 6 and up
Cautions:
The Valley's dark history involves adultery and murder. While neither is graphically treated, these issues underlie the plot.
